THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES (DPS REGISTRATION, FINGERPRINTS, PICTURES), ARE NOT MANDATORY TO COMPLETE BEFORE TAKING THE CLASS.
The Texas Department of Public Safety strongly suggests, as we do, that applicants complete the paperwork of the application process on their web site: www.texasonline.com. This should decrease administrative time, cost, and turnaround time to receive your license. During the registration process, you will be able to pay the state fee with an approved credit card. You will still need to download and print form CHL6 which will be sent back to DPS with your pictures and other documentation we give you at class.

If for some reason you are unable to complete the DPS online application, you will need to download and print the following forms:

  • CHL6 (photo holder/id signature)
  • CHL78A (original application form)
  • CHL85 (authorization for release of records)
  • CHL86 (knowledge of laws and eligibility affidavits)
  • CHL78B (if needed - address and business history form)
  • CHL78C (if needed - reported history form)

Out of state residents may now obtain a Texas concealed handgun license. They will need a current valid driver's license from the state they are a resident of and will still need to take the class in Texas.

DPS IS NOW ONLY ACCEPTING DIGITAL FINGERPRINTS OBTAINED EXCLUSIVELY FROM L1 SOLUTIONS. THESE FINGERPRINTS ARE DIGITALLY SCANNED AND TRANSMITTED DIRECTLY TO DPS VIA ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION. ALL FINGERPRINTS FROM ANY OTHER SOURCE (INCLUDING LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES) WILL BE REJECTED.

To have your fingerprints processed by L1 Solutions:

  1. complete the DPS online application process (this must be completed PRIOR to having your fingerprints taken.
  2. Print online receipt from DPS. You will need to provide this receipt to L1 Solutions.
  3. Make an appointment with L1 Solutions at either one of their two locations. Their charge is $9.99.

In the event an applicant cannot complete the online application, you must submit, by mail, the hardcopy registration forms (Downloadable Forms Here). If you are unable to download and print the forms, we will supply them during class. On receipt of the hardcopy registration forms, DPS will respond, via mail, with a reference number. You can then make the appointment to obtain your fingerprints.

Please understand, none of the above actions exempt you from attending the class and the handgun qualification.
